This exhibition is a celebration of the life and paintings of Lynn Kotula, and includes the work of Flavia Bacarella, Monica Bernier, Paula Heisen, Leslie Hertzog, Judy Hoffman, Maja Kihlstedt and Maria Pia Marrella – artists who shared Kotula’s friendship and passion for art. Based in New York City, Kotula had a studio on the Upper West Side and spent the summers painting in Blairstown, NJ. She exhibited at the Bowery Gallery in NYC. In cancer treatment for over six years, Kotula continued to paint and show her work – she died this past February. She was an inspiration to her friends: an artist’s artist with a serious work ethic and critical acumen. A generous spirit, she supported her art pals with insight and emotional encouragement.

An observational painter, Kotula defined her approach like this: “In all my painting, what compels me is exploring the tension between what I see and what I can invent as an equivalent in two dimensions. I want to paint paintings in which each gesture – color or line – has multiple meanings... I love the transformation of the seen into the language of color and shape. I want my paintings to tell the non-verbal stories that only painting can tell.”
