Buster Levi Gallery is pleased to present Recent Work, by Rick Brazill at 121 Main Street in Cold Spring, New York. The exhibition will run from August 4 through August 27, 2023.  The opening for the show will be on Friday August 4, 2023 from 5-8pm.

Rick Brazill paints still lives.  His subjects are common every day objects, mostly food, found in the home. The paintings display clear appreciation for light and a definite interest in the different textures of each of his subjects. The paintings are executed slowly, surfaces are built up patiently. The objects sit solidly in space and their sense of dimension is palpable.

As keenly observant as Brazill is as an artist, his paintings convey much more. For one, they have an eye toward art historical precedents. For example, in works such as Cranberry Scones one senses the presence of Chardin. His handling of various surfaces, especially glass look back to any of the great still life traditions, such as 17th century Dutch painting. The painting Page Mandarin recalls still life objects in Roman wall painting especially in its compositional structure. It is not just the past that Brazill confronts but also modern art when he arranges a sliced orange in a pattern or a group of tomatillos climb vertically on the picture plane rather than recede.

Though direct in subject, Brazill’s compositional placements are subtlety complex.  His range of vision include a variety of different angles. Although Brazill employs symmetrical arrangements, they are all different and he also nudges his objects toward the edges of the canvas. Spatially the work varies as well. Some of the paintings incorporate a lot of depth, while in others objects recede less and stress the two dimensionality of the painted surface.

Though ordinary in subject, this series of paintings by Brazill offer a rich and rewarding experience. Buster Levi Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from 12-5 pm.
