Buster Levi Gallery is pleased to present Second Nature new works on paper by Grey Zeien at 121 Main Street in Cold Spring, New York. The exhibition will run from November 2, 2018 through December 2, 2018. The opening for the show will be on Friday November 2, 2018 from 6-8:30 pm.

Second Nature is comprised of work that Grey Zeien has worked on over the last five years while he was involved with other projects. In some ways they are distinctive in comparison with his oeuvre. Zeien often creates works on paper; however these are the first that exhibit a physical dimension that extends into three-dimensional space. Although they contain mixed media, in this case natural organic elements or plant matter, as many of his previous work has; the integration on the whole is far subtler. Finally, their process involving crumpling paper, applique and paint have resulted in ‘shaped’ works more reminiscent of sculpture than traditional works on paper including collage.

At first glance, it may be hard to find references to the forms presented in this series. Flowers or various plant forms may come to mind, but none of the works really looks like a particular flower or plant. One clue may be found in some of the photographs from Zeien’s series I Segreti Delle Ulivi, such as Apulia#3, a photograph of a knotted root system of a tree. References aside, the works in Second Nature are abstract, emphasized by the choices of color and their surfaces. Although there are textural elements either from the combination of discarded scraps of paper, applique and integrated organic elements, they are not emphasized. The forms are allowed to stand for themselves, stressing their individuality and Zeien’s: “interest pushing the medium to test the limits of paper’s tensile stability and structural integrity”.

Buster Levi Gallery is open Friday through Sunday from 12-6 pm.
