Ursula Schneider, 30 Colors with Midnight Blue, 2022, Guerra paint on panel, 12x30”

This exhibition consists of two related series of abstract paintings created over the last year. All of the paintings are painted on specially made plywood supplied by a friend.  Though using different shapes; vertical stripes and concentric circles; the unifying focus of both series is the use of color to create rhythm, movement and mood. The stripe paintings are horizontally formatted on long thin rectangles with vertical stripes that reflect the direction of the wood grain. Each of the stripes are two inches wide painted in two rows one above the other with an area of color or bare wood that separates the two rows and the top row from the wall. Schneider has commented that she sees the colors as if they were notes in music moving across the work quickly or slowly depending of the color interaction. She has also likened these paintings to times of the day and the colors for each work are specifically chosen to reflect that intention. The colors are opaque and mat but still glow as if illuminated beneath their surface. The placement of the colors right next to each other reinforces this impression and helps to convey the atmospheric times of day.

In contrast to the stripe paintings, the use of color in the concentric circle paintings is more open as there is more exposed wood. As a result, the sensation of space is emphasized.  Schneider feels that this group of paintings are almost ‘cosmic’. The combination of color areas and open areas creates movement and a certain amount of depth that is not evident in stripe paintings. These works feel open as if they are radiating off their surfaces. A large part of this effect is Schneider’s choice of the wood and its mid-tone to slightly darker value. This has allowed her to use a wider range of colors that sit above, below or on the picture plane depending the value of the color.  Leaving areas of exposed wood is a practice that Schneider has used in her work before, in particular taking advantage of the wood grains to suggest shapes of mostly plants or animals. In these paintings, the wood is used more for its color tone and the grain to help create movement. Both series of recent paintings by Schneider are dynamic and the variety of the color palette, in particular the use of saturation, temperature and value, is stunning.

Buster Levi Gallery is open Saturday and Sunday from 12-6 pm.
