Ada Pilar Cruz Mangrove

Ada Pilar Cruz Mangrove

Ada Pilar Cruz’s print is titled Mangrove. My print is a carving of mangrove roots from a beach in north part of Puerto Rico. I find mangroves to be incredibly beautiful and mysterious. It is a tangle of arching roots interwoven with each other much like a huge basket. It also left a breathtaking impression when I learned that it was a place where slaves and indigenous people would hide from the Spanish during times of slavery. I remember trying to imagine people being courageous enough to live a hidden life with crabs and water snakes among other sea swamp creatures in order to avoid the cruelty of the Spanish. I tried to get as close as I could.

Ursula Schneider My Barge

Ursula Schneider My Barge

Ursula Schneider’s print is titled My Barge. The inspiration for my image are the boats passing by on the Hudson River, their shapes and sizes, their humming sound and the expanding pattern in the water they leave behind. There are three hands, one is my sisters, one my brothers, and the third is mine. To get the effect I wanted, I traded to get an old weathered play wood window cover in exchange for a new one. I made sketches, then cut out the shapes and drilled the holes to represent stars. It was a great experience to see the prints being created and having them hang to dry as a group of diverse images.
